Take This Quick Test and See if Sleep’s Hurting Your Fitness Journey

I’m the one to talk on this subject since my PT still have to trick me into rest and recovery days. Even through injuries, not uncommon to professional athletes, we train, something I would never recommend for a client. I know I know to practice what you preach right, so I do (try) to rest more normally when my body fights me back with an untimely injury. There is a laundry list of great health benefits when it comes to sleep, including mental and physical improvements. Emotionally, we all have those days when we are more irritable or moody. Usually, the cause is a lack of sleep or even too much sleep. You remember the time you slept in and stayed lying in bed drafting on and off; how did that day end up?

Passionate and Ready to Start

Most would agree with the idiom of goal setting as the great and one of my favorite authors; Tony Robbins stated, setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible. In the lovely world of fitness, pretty much every aspect is about measurement, wins, and losses. Since fitness started making its march to popularity, the most attractive measure was and quite certainly still is weight loss. Most before progress pictures or measurements (start) your progress towards the change (after) you’re aiming to accomplish. Make no mistakes have faith in goal setting; I have an abstract way of goal setting myself even though the traditional process is not for everyone. I am also a firm believer that success leaves clues, as we have heard many times over.

Rapid Weight Loss Routine Anyone Can Do

Diets, how we love diets. A wedding coming up, let’s severally cut the calorie intake. The summer is nearing, “only salad for me please”. There are countless options when it comes to dieting, and admittingly I’ve tested quite a few out on myself. What I’ve come to realize, it doesn’t matter the approach, it has to be one that can be sustainable. A few months ago when I wrote on nutrition, I stated, it is not about dieting or any fab type things but more so a lifestyle change. Let me backtrack, having weight loss short-term goals are a great motivator to push us forward. The idea is to live a healthy lifestyle, assumedly speaking given, we’re in the health in-fitness space.

Widen Your Squat Stance

Today I want to give some coaching cues to a gem-type squat variation. Especially for taller athletes and those athletes with a lot of muscle mass. Before we dive into that wide stance also known as the sumo squat technique cues and benefits. Let’s for clarity purposes discuss the standard squat position, which has been highly debated for many decades now. The depth, whether your knees should or should not go past your toes but the one thing that has remained constant is; no sinking knees meaning when you’re at the bottom of your squat the knees start to go in toward one another. However, we can agree that the standard squat setup is feet shoulder wide apart and the weight remains constant through the midfoot.

Staying Fit While Staying at Home

This morning started unlike normal mornings, set to go for a run and then attack the day as usual. I didn’t make it out the door for that run and consequently, the other tasks slowly did not happen either. We are in the second lockdown phase with no end in sight and I’ll like to complain. It is not all that bad, I’ve recently had a reminder of what's bad. This film is posted on YouTube from a “good news broadcast” entitled “if you were born in 1900”. By age 14 world war 1 begun in 1918 which claimed 22 million lives, at 18 you were relieved that the war is over then the Spanish Flu arrived. From 1918 until 1920 taking some 50 million people's lives.

Progression

How do fitness, life, and sports correlate? Have you ever heard the saying; ball is life? I tend to talk about basketball or strength and conditioning as a base for most of my blogs or speeches. However, it doesn’t matter the sport or discipline, once passionately pursued. Why? Because everything teaches life lessons if we’re looking for them, that is where the concept of awareness comes into play. Everything progresses whether we’re aware of that progression or not, my high school basketball coach drilled in our head,” I have to make you do the things you do not want to do, for you to get what you claim you want to have”. Back then, I thought it was just a clever way to have us endure the torture of practices but later on, I appreciated its value and his value of course. That’s along the lines of enjoying the process, in fact, that same coach also stated “You’re either getting better or you’re staying the same and if you’re staying the same, you’re becoming worse”.

Basketball: How The Game Is Played

Unpredictable, fast pace, change of directions, and amazing displays of athleticism. Everyone can grab a ball, head to a court, and play some ball. The game is so easily mocked, that the actual skill to perform at high levels sometimes, or in some places goes underappreciated. Unlike most team sports, which also have a bunch of individuals that need to mash together if they value winning. Basketball players have to understand both defensive strategies along with offensive strategies, and have the ability to switch between the two, often simultaneously.

What Is It Worth?

Nothing is guaranteed in life but death, not to sound so dark but it is the truth. We can have the most sophisticated plan that has been proven to increase one’s chances of achieving a goal. Yet we all know (although we may eventually hit our target or even surpass it), the way we get there is often not the way we planned it out. On average a person is 42% more likely to achieve a goal when it is written down, how much is that effort worth? Would your answer change if the percentage was 90%? Chances are everyone would be writing down goals, how about if it only raised your chances of attainment by 10%? Is it worth the effort?

Why Is My Weight Fluctuating?

I’m between a mesomorph and ectomorph but more a mesomorph than an ectomorph. Mesomorph is a body type that put-on muscles easily and the ectomorph body type usually has a smaller frame or long thin limbs. I have long fairly thin limbs but I can pack on muscle fast, as a young man that was great for my ego. Not so good for my sport of choice though which is basketball. Similar to boxing or track and field certain activities require you to maintain a certain weight while maximizing your strength at the ideal weight. I had jumped to 275 pounds after college where my playing weight was roughly 240 pounds. The Jets had the idea that I would have been a good tight end with some more muscle.

The Joy Of Fitness

It is five o’clock in the morning, sleep particles still in my eyes, and no time for breakfast we have a five-thirty call time. The sun did not welcome us to the track, only blinding headlights and coaches hyping us up, it is the start of preseason 2006. After freshman year, Cleveland State decided to part ways with the entire men’s basketball coaching staff to bring in the staff from Rutgers. Conditioning at five-thirty in the morning was their welcoming present with five minutes and thirty seconds mile time for the cherry on top. Every morning, my roommates who were also teammates and I rolled out of bed with just enough time to make the call time while some days we had preconditioning before the conditioning.

We Need to Recover Too

Getting the hang of the whole working out routine, feeling stronger, and more confident with the different lifts and machines. All of a sudden, we forget about the equally if not most important part of the fitness journey, recovery. We love the gains, after getting over the fear of fitness, we go all-in “team no days off”. The more workouts we can get in, the better. Not quite the truth when it comes to fitness, we all heard of the “fight or flight” mode in scientific terms sympathetic system. Well, that system keeps us hyped up ready to crush it, workout after workout.

Build Your House on Solid Grounds

Full disclaimer, I was the guy that just wanted to ball, let’s play, I didn’t care about technique, form, or even touching weights. Then something changed after ninth grade (freshman year) going into the tenth grade (sophomore year). Since I could remember playing basketball was my goal, unfortunately, most see professional sports or any performing arts career path as a pipe dream. Side note, wonder why? People throw out random stats like it’s over seven billion people in the world and there are only so many roster spots on any given professional team.

Why Not!

There’s a perception, well many perspectives are surrounding every subject imaginable. The simple title “Why Not” is a perspective opposed to “Why”. When we’re young, elders whether it is our parents or teachers typically allow us to dream wildly, and freely. They encourage us that this white-breaded man travels the air on a sled powered by reindeer. Or an invisible person exchange money for lost teeth. For the most part, that is all harmless lies to help children either cope with losing teeth or fill them with excitement for a gift given their good behavior. One could pose the question; Why would parents encourage their children to believe in such blatant lies? While another, why not allow their children to use their imagination?
